Description

Phal. tetraspis is native to the Andaman Islands, the Nicobar Islands, and northwestern Sumatra. Its natural habitat is the hot and wet jungles at elevations near sea level.

We crossed Phal. tetraspis var. alba with a spotted variety to get this wonderful new strain with randomly distributed fuchsia colored spots against an ivory white background. A small number of these seedlings may bloom without any spots. The lip has white calli (bumps or ridges). The flower spikes are held high above the leaves making a striking presentation. It is a free bloomer, which means it keeps blooms throughout the year without a rest. Easily forms multiple spikes that can bloom for several years, so do not cut it unless it is brown and dry. This can be grown in a pot or mounted (adjust watering as it dries faster when mounted). Tall spikes may need to be staked if potted. During the hot summer months mounted plants may need daily watering. Do not let it get too dry. Phal. tetraspis thrives in high humidity, warm temperatures, and good air circulation. A versatile plant, it can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights. Easy to grow and bloom, this makes a perfect beginner plant. Did we forget to mention that it is also fragrant? These plants are robust and have species vigor. It does not need a cool rest in the winter; give hot to warm conditions year round. A must for any species collection. Recommended for beginners, collectors of species and fragrant orchids.

We just received an Award of Merit (AM) from the American Orchid Society (AOS) for this new variety of Phal. tetraspis.
