Description

This is an exciting new cross! In this seed-grown population, we bred two unusual color forms of the species Phal. tetraspis to create an exciting new strain. The pod parent is the Purple/blue color form, while the pollen parent is the first, original, Silver Medal awarded ‘Coffee’ clone of the brunneola (brown) color form of Phal. tetraspis.

We have observed first blooming seedlings with color ranging from purple-red, to white with spots, to some with blue lip, and something in between as in this photo. One thing for sure, these compact plants have very strong species vigor, producing as many as 2-3 spikes as first blooming seedling. Plants have a multiple spike habit, long-lasting, waxy flowers, with a wonderful scent.

Phal. tetraspis is native to the Andaman Islands, the Nicobar Islands, and northwestern Sumatra. Its natural habitat is the hot and wet jungles at elevations near sea level. Phal. tetraspis is a free bloomer, producing good size fragrant flowers, up to 8 flowers on each tall, branching, upright inflorescence held well above the foliage. It is a compact plant and vigorous grower and can begin blooming on young small plants. It has a multiple spike habit—flowers will bloom from old spikes for several years while new spikes are forming, so it will flower for a very long period. Do not cut the spike unless it is dry and yellow. It can be grown either mounted or in a pot. Tall spikes may need to be staked if potted. Water and fertilize regularly. During the hot summer months mounted plants may need daily watering. Do not let it get too dry. Phal. tetraspis thrives in high humidity, warm temperatures, and good air circulation. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or underlights. Highly recommended for Phal species collectors and lovers of fragrant orchids. Seedlings are fun and exciting—no two will be identical. Flowers from this cross will produce a variety of colors and combinations. Buy two and compare!

PLEASE NOTE:
Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
