Description

This is an extremely interesting cross! The goal is to create a new strain of Phal. tetraspis by breeding a blue variety with a red one. The pod parent, Phal. tetraspis fma. livida 'Blue Bird', is a pale blue/lavender version of Phal. tetraspis fma. christiana (C1). The pollen parent, Phal. tetraspis var. red 'Montclair Ember' AM/AOS, is our own awarded red variety that is a proven breeder.

Phal. tetraspis is native to the Andaman Islands, the Nicobar Islands, and northwestern Sumatra. Its natural habitat is the hot and wet jungles at elevations near sea level. Phal. tetraspis is a free bloomer, producing good size fragrant flowers, up to 8 flowers on each tall, branching, upright inflorescence held well above the foliage. It is a compact plant and vigorous grower and can begin blooming on young small plants. It has a multiple spike habit—flowers will bloom from old spikes for several years while new spikes are forming, so it will flower for a very long period. Do not cut the spike unless it is dry and yellow. It can be grown either mounted or in a pot. Tall spikes may need to be staked if potted. Water and fertilize regularly. During the hot summer months mounted plants may need daily watering. Do not let it get too dry. Phal. tetraspis thrives in high humidity, warm temperatures, and good air circulation. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or underlights.

We have not seen any blue coming out of the first bloom seedlings, but lots of red—solid red and bold red spots!  So we believe the blue color in this cross is recessive.  We are observing flowers that bloomed during the cooler temperatures of spring have more white and red color, while flowers blooming during the warmer temperatures of the summer come out with more red. No two seedlings will be alike, which is the excitement of buying seedlings as opposed to clones. Buy two for fun and compare! It has great potential to be a valuable parent for breeding program for red Phals. Very highly recommended for species collector or for hybridizing program!

PLEASE NOTE:
Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
