Description

We have waited for years for the release of this extraordinary strain and we are proud to be the first to offer it in the US. Phal. schilleriana is a remarkable species from the Philippines, famous for its long branching inflorescence adorned with dozens of soft pink fragrant flowers and distinctive markings on its leaves.

Phal. schilleriana ‘JM - Sakura King’ received an Award of Merit (AM) of 86 points and Certificate of Cultural Excellence (CCE) of 93 points on Mar 05, 2015 from the American Orchid Society (AOS) at the Taiwan International Orchid Show, as well as winner of the 2015 Butterworth Prize. At the time of the awards, the plant was described “Three hundred sixty full-formed, flat flowers and 54 buds spectacularly arranged on six massive, multi-branched, staked inflorescences to 140cm long, over two large crowns with pendent silver-mottled, dark green leaves to 70cm long mounted on a large treefern slab; shapely sepals and petals medium lavender, darker centrally with fine longitudinal lines in slightly darker lavender; lip unusually flat and handsome, medium lavender on midlobe, side lobes white, red proximally; column lavender, anther cap white; substance very good; texture matte.”

I was there in person when this plant was awarded. It was simply spectacular and impressive having over 300 flowers with amazing branching habit—a characteristic lost in modern Phal. schilleriana when the breeder is seeking the perfect flower form to please the judges to garner a flower quality award. Amazingly, the awarded plant came from a group of Phal. schilleriana that were rescued in 1975 from the deforestation of the jungle for palm oil production. This strain is the one with the best color and shape from hundreds of rescue plants. We do not know which region of the Philippine Islands this species came from, but its leaves are longer and narrower than the species from other regions.

We are very fortunate to obtain a mother flask from a selfing of this incredible awarded strain. These plants have long and narrow deep green leaves with distinctive markings. It is extremely floriferous, with branching inflorescence, sweet fragrance, and excellent species vigor. Its abundant flowers make an excellent cascading waterfall effect for hanging basket or mounting—a truly magnificent display. If growing in a pot, we recommend staking the spikes to support the weight of the flowers. It can be grown under lights or on a windowsill. Easy to grow and a reliable bloomer. Don’t miss this opportunity to get this exciting new strain. Highly recommended for Phalaenopsis lover, beginner, species collector, and collector of fragrant orchids.
