This cross was registered in 1987 by Ooi Leng Sun in Malaysia. We remade the cross using the indigo form of Phal. violacea, thus creating an exciting coerulea strain.

Phal. violacea is endemic to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and northwestern Sumatra. Phal. micholitzii is endemic to the Zamboanga peninsula in the Philippine islands of Mindanao and Luzon. Both species are found as hot to warm growing epiphytes in very moist lowland tropical forests especially along rivers. The climate and temperature in these areas are fairly stable all year round. Both species thrive in hot to warm temperatures, high humidity, and good air circulation. They do not have a rest period and can bloom at any time, but primarily between May and October.

Phal. violacea has a multiple spike habit. It blooms on older mature spikes for several years, as well as blooming on new spikes. Sweetly fragrant flowers bloom sequentially along the spike, with 2 to 3 open at any one time. Phal. micholitzii, when used in hybridizing, reduces the size of the plant and also washes out the color of the other parent. This new strain of Phal. Penang Violacea is compact, has very attractive, strongly fragrant pastel blue flowers with a light green edge on the petals. Like its Phal. violacea parent, it has a multi-spike habit and is a sequential bloomer. Do not cut off the spike unless it is brown and dry. It has no rest period, so do not provide a cooling period. Phal. Penang Violacea does best in warm to hot temperatures, high humidity, good air circulation, even watering and fertilizer all year round. It can be grown on a windowsill or under lights. Highly recommended for lovers of novelty hybrid Phal.
