Paph. villosum (villosum 'Hung Sheng' BM/TPS x self)
Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) villosum can be found in northeast India in the state of Assam, southern China, and the Myanmar states of Kachin, Kayar, Shan and Upper Sagaing Region. It grows in cloud forests at altitudes of 3,600 feet to 6,900 feet in areas with abundant rainfall. This is a selfing (i.e., self pollination) of the clone ‘Hung Sheng’, which was awarded a Bronze Medal by the Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society. The Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society has been making improvements on this (and other) species through its breeding active program. Paph. villosum 'Hung Sheng' BM/TPS has a very good color, form, and a free-blooming habit; and flower lasts a long time. Paph. villosum is one of the foundation species of "bull dog" or complex Paphiopedilums. Paph. villosum 'Hung Sheng' BM/TPS is very compact, has attractive dark florist green foliage, temperature tolerant, and can tolerate city water well. Note: Paph. villosum needs a well-defined dormant period to stimulate flowering. Stop fertilization and grow drier and colder than usual in late fall. Nighttime temperature during this period should be under 60°F. Resume regular watering, fertilizer, and temperature once a bud appears.
