Description

We are excited to offer this first release in USA—Paph. philippinense ‘Miao Hua’ SM/TPS. It is the trademark plant of Mr. Su of Miao Hua Orchids. It received a very high point Silver Metal (SM) from the Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society (TPS), which is equivalent to Award of Merit (AM) of the American Orchid Society (AOS).

Found in the Philippines and northern Borneo at elevations up to 500 meters on limestone outcroppings as a large sized, hot growing terrestrial or epiphyte with up to 9 long, glossy green, very thick leaves. It blooms in late winter through fall on 2-foot long brown purple inflorescence carrying up to 7 successively blooming showy flowers with long twisty petals.

Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them bright and warm with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year.

Paph. philippinense Miao Hua' SM/TPS has set the bench mark for all Paph. philippinense judging in Taiwan. In my opinion, it is the best clone of Paph. philippinense that I have seen, and some of the  primary hybrids of this clone have been remarkable.

These wonderful plants have tremendous species vigor with thick husky foliage. The gorgeous, long-lasting flowers are waxy and have a heavy substance and make a beautiful, eye-catching display. We grow our multi-floral Paphs alongside our novelty Phals like Phal. bellina and Phal. amboinensis.  They are easy to grow and are perfect for beginners. Highly recommended for the species collector, exhibiting and breeding stock.
