Paph. mastersianum (Paph. mastersianum ' Watercolor Artist' x self) , NF740
Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) mastersianum is a highly sought after species and rarely found in the market. The last time we offered this species was in 2004. It is a very important species in hybridizing because it passes on its thick glossy flower substance and thick upright inflorescence (worth 5 points in AOS judging) to its progeny.
This is a warm to cool growing orchid that likes to be moist (but not soggy) year round and have a balanced fertilizer in the growing season with a lessening in the winter. This species is a slow grower and takes up to 4 years to grow into blooming size, which is twice the time compared to Paph. callosum type.
‘Watercolor Artist’ is a vigorous strain originally from Stewart Orchids that I acquired in the 1980s. It has mottled leaves that are attractive even when not in bloom.
As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights. We grow these plants alongside our novelty Phals and they love warm days and warm nights. An absolute must-have for the serious Paph. collector. Very Highly Recommended!
