Description

NF668 Paph. liemianum (Bear Orchid Strain)

Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) liemianum is found only in northern Sumatra at elevations of 600 to 1000 meters as a small to medium sized, warm growing terrestrial or lithophyte. It is a sequential bloomer that blooms in the late winter and early spring. Its leaves are dark green above and red speckled underneath.

From the great breeding program of Mr. Hung Sheng Bear in Taiwan, this strain is a sibling cross of two select forms of the species! Mr. Bear is a premier Paph hybridizer and is the past president of Taiwan Paphiopedilum Society (TPS). He has the best Paphiopedilum species collection in Taiwan, if not all of Asia.

Paph. liemianum is an easy to grow sequential bloomer. Its compact spike can produce up to two flowers at a time, each measuring around 3.2 inches, on compact 6 – 8 inch spikes, blooming  sequentially up to 8 months. The dark green leaves are attractively marked underneath with red speckling. They grow well under more shaded Phalaenopsis conditions. Excellent for growing under lights or on a windowsill. These plants are perfect for beginners and ideal for space-challenged growers. Highly recommended for beginners and Paph collectors.

Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow these plants in intermediate light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. Water twice per week for best results. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year.
