Description

Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) Wössner Black Wing is a beautiful cross registered by F. Glanz in 2009. This cross has been remade using two phenomenal parents. This cutting edge breeding has produced the darkest color flowers we've seen so far.

The pod parent, Paph. rothschildianum is called the “King of Paphs.” Its impressive, large, stately flowers always draw attention at orchid shows. They can be slow to reach blooming size as seedlings, but once they reach maturity they flower reliably every year. As the plants get larger the flowers become even more impressive. Paph. rothschildianum ‘Rex’, is considered the best with a First Class Certificate (FCC) from the American Orchid Society (AOS). (“Rex” means king in Latin). The pollen parent, Paph. anitum (syn. Paph. adductum var. anitum), is a variety of Paph. adductum with blue-green leaves and dark (almost black) dorsal sepal. Paph. anitum ‘Red’ has red petals and pouch. Paph. anitum imparts its color on all segments of the Paph. rothschildianum flower and makes its leaves more compact. Flowers of this remarkable hybrid are large, long lasting and resemble Paph. rothschildianum but with a wider dorsal and very dark markings in the dorsal and petals.

Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Can be grown outdoors in warm climates. Can be grown on a bright windsowsill or under lights. New technology advancements in LED lighting now make it possible to bloom and enjoy these plants in the home without a greenhouse.

This remarkable multifloral hybrid is rarely available on the market. We will only release a limited number of blooming size seedlings that are at least 5-7 years old. Similar to its Paph. rothschildianum parent, these plants are slow growers but once they reach maturity they flower reliably every year. Very highly recommended!

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
