Paph. Payakka Kodkod (thaianum x concolor) , NF2687
Paph. thaianum is an adorable, relatively new, micro-miniature species from the west coast of Thailand. It is the smallest of the genus with a leaf span of 3 – 4 inches (4 – 10 cm) when fully mature. The attractive foliage has dark mottling on its soft green leaves that is purple on the underside. It flowers in the spring on an erect, up to 6-inch inflorescence. Its 1.5 – 2 inch (4 – 5 cm), pristine-white flowers are lightly stippled with maroon speckles; the pouch is spotted maroon internally, and perfectly finished with a green to yellow-green staminode. Paph. concolor is an easy to grow small terrestrial orchid found in southern China, Myanmar, Thailand and Southern and Central Vietnam. It has dark green and grey-green mottled leaves, up to 6 inches long by 1½ inches wide. Flowers are a beautiful soft yellow with fine maroon speckling.
We have not bloomed these plants yet, but expect 1 – 2 long-lasting, soft butter-yellow flowers on a sturdy, self-supporting spike above attractive foliage. Plants are micro-miniature and compact. Blooming size in 2.5 inch pots.
Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Can be grown on a bright windowsill or under lights. We grow these plants alongside our Phals since they have similar requirements. An absolute must-have for any miniature orchid collection. Very Highly Recommended!
