Description

Paph. O' Captain My Captain was registered by Luan Thi Dong in 2018. (O' Captain! My Captain! is a poem written by Walt Whitman in 1865 about the death of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln). This easy to grow hybrid is likened to a Paph. charlesworthii on steroids, being 87% Paph. charlesworthii. These vigorous plants will produce deep-burgundy to red colored flowers with a large, full dorsal sepal. The long-lasting flowers have a satin sheen. This plant will also tolerate cooler temperatures in winter. Flowering should be twice per year.

The pod parent, Paph. King Charles, is Paph. Wawona Maiden × Paph. charlesworthiiPaph. Wawona Maiden = Paph. Hellas x Paph. charlesworthii. The cold tolerance comes from the famous complex Paph. Hellas (having 38% Paph. insigne). The pollen parent, Paph. charlesworthii, keeps the size of plants really small. In fact the seedlings of this cross look very much like Paph. charlesworthii.

Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow these plants in intermediate light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. Water twice per week for best results. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Excellent for growing under lights, on a windowsill, or in an orchid cabinet. Plants are weather tolerant, pest and disease resistant. We are looking forward to really fantastic flowers. Can be grown outdoors in a shade spot in areas like Southern California or South Florida where winters are mild and frost free. Highly recommended for beginners, Paph collectors, and growers with limited space.

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
