Description

Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) Mem. Larry Heuer is a highly desirable plant with large, showy flowers. It is a primary hybrid of two magnificent species: Paph. malipoense and Paph. emersonii.

The pod parent, Paph. malipoense, is native to China and has very tall 18-22 inch inflorescence with huge green flowers, overlaid with burgundy markings. The tall stems take about 6 months to develop once the flower spike begins at the center of the leaves. The pollen parent, Paph. emersonii, is found in Northern Vietnam and the Yunnan, Guangxi, and Guangdong provinces of China. It is found in rocks, sandstone, and clay on mossy cliffs in elevations of 1,500 – 2,560 feet (460 to 750 m). The plant blooms from late spring to early summer with one to two 4-inch wide flowers per inflorescence. The plant size is small when compared to other Paph. Flowers are fragrant.

Paph. Mem. Larry Heuer has huge, fragrant, long-lasting, lime to chartreuse green flowers, its petals tessellated with burgundy markings and bearing a wonderful, round, lime green “balloon” pouch (inherited from its two parents). A delightfully compact growing plant with deep dark-green foliage that is attractive even when not in flower. The Paph. emersonii imparts warmth tolerance to this hybrid. Grow this hybrid alongside with your Phals. Great for windowsill or under-lights culture. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Very highly recommended for its unique clear color, impressive flower size, and wonderful fragrance!
