Description

This is another example of cutting edge Paphiopedilum (abbreviated Paph.) breeding. Paph. Hilo Black Eagle was originally created by Hilo Orchid Farm and registered in 2018. Paph. Hilo Black Eagle is Paph. Johanna Burkhardt (rothschildianum x adductum) that is back crossed onto Paph. rothschildianum, giving it a double shot of Paph. rothschildianum.

The pod parent, Paph. Johanna Burkhardt was made by Hans Burkhardt who was a professor of biology at the University of California, Berkley, and also a great scientist. He created many interesting hybrids in the 1980s through 1990s. He named Paph. Johanna Burkhardt after his wife Johanna.

This cross was made using two exceptional, awarded parents from Hilo Orchid Farm, creating an amazing combination! The pod parent, Paph. Johanna Burkhardt 'Perfection' AM/AOS, at the time of award had five flowers well-positioned on one 72-cm inflorescence; flowers chartreuse; dorsal sepal heavily veined deep mahogany, coalesced basally; synsepal less heavily veined deep mahogany; petals heavily spotted mahogany, coalesced apically; pouch overlaid brown; substance firm; texture matte.

The pollen parent, Paph. rothschildianum 'New Horizon' FCC/AOS, at the time of award had four flowers on one 53-cm inflorescence; sepals chartreuse striped dark mahogany; petals chartreuse stippled dark mahogany; pouch cream colored overlaid mahogany; substance firm; texture waxy. Paph. rothschildianum is called the “King of Paphs.” Its impressive, large, stately flowers always draw attention at orchid shows. They can be slow to reach blooming size as seedlings, but once they reach maturity they flower reliably every year. As the plants get larger the flowers become even more impressive.

Paphs detest soggy growing medium; pot in well-draining media. Grow them in bright light and warm temperature with high humidity and good air circulation. As with all Paphs, its roots are sensitive to salt buildup from excess fertilizer which causes leaf tips to turn brown. It is a good practice to flush the medium with fresh, clean water once a month and repot Paphs in fresh media every year. Can be grown outdoors in warm climates. Can be grown on a bright windsowsill or under lights. New technology advancements in LED lighting now make it possible to bloom and enjoy these plants in the home without a greenhouse.

This strain of Paph. Hilo Black Eagle produces 4 – 5 large Paph. rothschildianum-like flowers with intense dark color (almost black) when fully mature. The double shot of Paph. rothschildianum and combination of Paph. adductum will keep the plant more compact with 45 degree up-right leaves. We will only release a limited number of blooming size seedlings that are at least 5-7 years old. Similar to its Paph. rothschildianum parent, these plants are slow growers but once they reach maturity they flower reliably every year. Highly recommended for all multi-floral Paph lovers.

PLEASE NOTE: Since this is a Seedling Population (not a Mericlone which produces exact duplicates), the picture is for illustration purposes only. No two plants will be the same from this cross, and they will flower in a range of possibilities coming from the two parents.
