Description

Formerly known as Dockrillia wassellii (all Dockrillia are now classified as Dendrobium), Dendrobium wassellii is found in Queensland, Australia as a hot to warm growing epiphytic species at elevations around 1,000 feet (300 m). We obtained these seed-grown plants from a private collector in Australia. 'White Smoke' is a very nice strain.

This unusual species is very easy to grow and has 3 to 4-inch tall, weird, succulent-like growth habit with a creeping white rhizome and stubby terete pseudobulbs. It has up to 12-inch long racemes that form in the summer eventually carrying dense, 40 to 60 spidery 1-inch flowers in the winter; the blooms are creamy white with a large purple-spotted lip. Being weather tolerant, these plants are tolerant of extremes, favoring warm temperature. Can be grown outdoors in areas like South Florida where winters are mild, frost free and above 50°F. Provide bright light (plants are tolerant of bright light and full morning sun) and good air movement throughout the year. Excellent for growing on a bright windowsill or under lights. These plants are best mounted on cork to accommodate its rambling growth habit, but also grow well in pots in a potting media with good drainage. Plants should be watered and fertilized regularly during active growth, let dry between watering. At the end of autumn, the amount of water should be gradually reduced. It needs a dry rest in the fall without fertilizer and less water prior to the blooming season. If you are looking for a compact orchid with and abundance of blooms, this is the one!
