Dendrobium smilliae is a sea level species (section Pedilonum) from New Guinea and parts of tropical north Australia. The watermelon-colored flowers are borne at the ends of deciduous canes which occur in the early spring. Being a sea level species, Den. smilliae requires warm temperatures and ample water throughout the growing season. A cool dry rest in the winter will promote the best flowering. Very temperature tolerant species to grow. Flowers last for months.
