Description

This unusual micro-miniature species is found in Papua New Guinea at elevations around 4,900 – 6,900 feet (1,500 to 2,100 meters) in wet montane forests in areas of with high year-round rainfall and high humidity. It is a miniature to small sized, cool to cold growing epiphyte or lithophyte with pendent stems carrying numerous, small, blue-green leaves all along the stem that blooms at most any time of the year on short, pendulous, clusters of densely flowered inflorescence arising from near the apex of the stem. The adorable flowers are dark pink.

Because of their sharply pendant habit, these plants are best grown on a mount. Tree fern or other water-retentive mount is preferable since the plants should never be allowed to dry out. If you have difficulty growing plants on mounts, this species will respond reasonably well if grown in a hanging pot or clay pot with a well-drained, yet moisture retentive mix such as sphagnum moss/perlite or tree fern fiber and perlite. This species does best under cool to intermediate conditions with constant, high humidity, air movement and year-round watering and fertilizer, although somewhat drier conditions during the winter months are beneficial. The optimum light level is dependent on the growing temperatures. The cooler the plants are grown, the more light they will tolerate (no direct sun). Light levels corresponding to bright semi-shade are a required for adequate flowering. It can rebloom from older canes. Can be grown outdoors in areas where summers are cool and winters are mild, such as the Bay Area in Northern California, in a north or east exposure, alongside cymbidiums. This plant can be grown in a terrarium under cool to intermediate temperatures with high humidity and air circulation.
