Bllra. Big Shot 'Hilo Sparke' , MC1470
Beallara Big Shot 'Hilo Sparkle' (syn. Schunkeara Big Shot 'Hilo Sparkle') is a patented hybrid that marks a new standard for Oncidium intergeneric hybrids. This hybrid is a big improvement over its pod parent Alcra. Tahoma Glacier—it is compact in size (pseudobulbs are 3 to 4.5 inches tall) and yet retains the strikingly large star shape blooms with sparkling texture. The flowers are creamy white with irregular purple blotches on the basal half of the sepals and petals. The lip is creamy white with a broad maroon blotch surrounding the callus. The flowers last up to 8 weeks, have a firm substance and crystalline texture, and a slight scent. The natural horizontal spread is 4.8 inches (12.2 cm); natural vertical spread is 5 inches (12.9 cm). The plant produces one 15-inch inflorescence on the first bloom with six flowers. Usually, it produces one inflorescence per pseudobulb, but at times, two inflorescences per pseudobulb have been observed. It is free flowering and can flower twice a year, although the predominant flowering season is fall (October through December).
This Oncidium intergeneric hybrid has Brassia, Miltoniopsis, and Miltonia in its background so it is tolerant of temperature extremes (with air circulation), from hot daytime to cool nighttime temperature (favoring intermediate temperatures). Beallara is very easy to grow under a variety of conditions and a proven reliable bloomer, which makes it a perfect beginner plant. It prefers bright light, but protect it from the hot, sunny and dry conditions during summer time. It is a highly rewarding plant that would be welcome in any orchid collection.
