Description

Brassocattleya (abbreviated Bc.) Yellow Bird is a classic B. nodossa hybrid that was created and registered by H&R Nursery (Hawaii) in 1990. At the time of award, Bc. Yellow Bird 'Tigertail' AM/AOS had over 700 flowers!

The pod parent, B. nodosa, is commonly known as “Lady of the Night” for its nighttime fragrance. It imparts to its progeny its easy growth habit, flower longevity and wonderful evening fragrance. The pollen parent, is the tetraploid strain of Bc. Richard Mueller (B. nodosa x C. millerii). It is a fantastic parent, producing many well-known hybrids including Bc. Rustic Spots (Item # MC2758). Its progeny are easy to grow, floriferous, fragrant, and have a distinctive lip.

Bc. Yellow Bird 'Tigertail' AM/AOS is extremely popular and highly sought after. It is easy to grow and bloom, and tolerant of a wide variety of conditions. A perfect plant for beginners. Plants can be acclimated to exposure to direct sun, though it will benefit from some shade during the hottest hours of the day.

Compact plants produce numerous clusters of star-shaped yellow flowers twice a year that change color as it matures (a trait inherited from Bc. Richard Mueller). They usually open orange/red and then turn yellow over time. Can be grown outdoors year round in areas where summers are hot and winters are mild and frost free. The plant can be grown either mounted, hanging basket or in a pot. Mounted plants require frequent (daily or near daily watering or rain) throughout the summer. At the time of award, Bc. Yellow Bird 'Tigertail' AM/AOS had over 700 flowers! Highly recommended.
