Caring for Orchids
Paphiopedilum
(paff-ee-oh-PED-ih-lum)
Paphiopedilums are called Lady Slippers because their lip is shaped
like a pouch or the toe of a slipper. The fascinating flowers are
available in broad array of colors, shapes and sizes. Due to their
waxy or lacquered appearance, they often appear more artificial
than real. The blooms last for weeks and months. Paphiopedilums
are the ideal orchid for the home environment or patio. They are
among the easiest and most rewarding orchids to grow.
LIGHTING
In their native habitat, Paphiopedilums get very little light. This
characteristic makes them very useful house plants. Only moderate
lighting is required for healthy growth and flower production. Paphiopedilums
prefer either an east or a shaded south-facing window. West windows
should be used with caution. Depending upon the location of the
home, the west window may become very hot during the late spring
through early fall. The foliage on the plants may on your Paphiopedilum.
TEMPERATURE
Paphiopedilums may be divided into two mains groups: the Bulldog
type-those with uniformly green leaves and the Maudiae type, those
with mottled leaves. The Bulldog type plants are intermediate growers.
Provide nighttime temperatures 50 to 60°F and daytime temperatures
under 80°F. This type will not flower unless the nighttime temperature
drops below 60°F for a few weeks during the late fall and winter.
This type may also be grown under a sheltered patio with relative
ease.
The Maudiae type plants are warm growers. They are the ideal companion
for Phalaenopsis. Provide nighttime temperatures 60 to 65°F
and daytime temperatures 70 to 85°F. They thrive under normal
household conditions.
WATERING
Paphiopedilums should never dry out in between waterings! Depending
upon the temperature, Paphiopedilums should be watered about once
or twice a week. During the summer, the plants may need to be watered
every 4-5 days. The rule of thumb for watering should be as
followed : More heat more
water, less heat less water.
Paphiopedilums prefer to be kept on the moist side but not soggy.
Try to water the plants early in the day, so that the foliage will
be dry by nightfall. To prevent bacterial and fungal disease use
Physan 20 once a month.
HUMIDITY
Paphiopedilums prefer 50 to 60% humidity. Often a kitchen or bathroom
will provide sufficient humidity. Humidity
Trays may be needed for other locations in the house.
FERTILIZER
Paphiopedilums must be fertilized on a regular basis! For best results,
use Norman's Optimal Orchid Nutrients
every other week. Reduce strength to 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of
water. It is recommended to pre-water plants, before applying the
diluted nutrient solution if the potting media is dry.
POTTING
Paphiopedilums should be grown in Fine
Orchid Bark Mix. Paphiopedilums must be repotted once a year,
Ideally, Paphiopedilums should be repotted immediately after flowering.
They prefer to be potted in as small a pot as possible.
PESTS
Common pests associated with Paphiopedilums are scale, mealy bugs
and spider mites. X-CLUDE,
encapsulated pyrethrum time-release insecticide, and Neem
Oil are the most efficient methods of pest control.
